You have a vocabulary quiz.  If you finish early work on their personal narratives.

LEARNING GOAL: RI6 Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text. 

How do you persuade people to do something?  Make a list of things/ways you might make someone stop smoking.

As we read, think about the author's purpose.  Why is he delivering this sermon?   As write down emotional appeals (pathos).  Remember logos, pathos, and ethos.  Remember for a persuasive argument to be successful it must contain each of these.  But, as we read you need to write down at least four emotional appears.  Emotional appeals include FEAR, PITY, GUILT (emotions), etc.

HW: Questions 1-3 and 5 on page 130.  In a brief blog entry discuss how he develops his argument.

Monday

Today, we need to put words of the day on the board, and then I will give you about 30 minutes to work on your essays that you started on Friday.

After this we need to discuss "Puritan" America and Jonathan Edwards.

Friday

Okay - so here is an essay quiz for you to do today. 

English 11: Native and Colonial Writings

A)   Choose one of the writings that we have read and write an essay of 1-page or more on why the piece needs to be read.  For this assignment you need to make sure you have a hook, a thesis, an order of development, and that you use proof from the text and explain your proof in relation to your thesis. 

You will be graded on the following:

      This quiz is worth 60 pts.

1)   Hook/Thesis/Order – your set-up.  How well you set up the essay.  (10 pts)

2)   Order – Does your essay follow the order of your set-up and do you have transitions from one paragraph to the next.  (10 pts)

3)   IDEAS – do you have ideas that reveal insight into the text and do you use examples from the text and explain them.  (30 pts)

Thursday

Today, we are going to discuss your "Personal Narrative" drafts and then finish "Of Plymouth Plantation".  Note, you might have an essay quiz tomorrow, and you will have time to work on your personal narratives in class next week.  I will give you a detailed RUBRIC for it on Monday.

Read (as a group) “Of Plymouth Plantation” pages 102 – 110

Questions 1-3, 6-7 on page 111.

Today we need to discuss your answers to yesterday's reading and go over Ethos, Logos, and Pathos.  We also need to put words of the day on the board. 

 

LOGOS - Appeal of Logic (is your argument logical)
ETHOS - Appeal of self (does your audience like due to how your act, speak or write)
PATHOS - Emotional Appeal (why should your audience care, what is in it for them?)

Read (as a group) “Of Plymouth Plantation” pages 102 – 110

Questions 1-3, 6-7 on page 111. 

Blog writing: Choose an experience or a scene from your life you want to describe.  Write a 1-page account to communicate the power of the experience.  Include vivid details.  Write in the 1^st voice.  Describe the emotional impact of the experience.  Use adverbs to relate the sequence of events.

Today, we are going to discuss the point of view and author's purpose of "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano" and compare the narrator with the narrator of "From the History of Virginia".

Later, you'll in teams, answer questions 1-3 and 7 on page 89.

 First, let us look up the new set of vocabulary and review a possible upcoming essay.
